By defining the status of <-RERU/-RARERU> in the system of the Japanese language not as an inflective particle (JODOSHI), but as a sort of ending added to some types of verbs to form a class of honorific verbs expressing the respect to the addressee and/or the event involving the addressee, we succeeded in showing that the <-RERU/-RARERU> verb group functions as an element of the DICTUM as against MODUS of the clause structure. As this type of verb group serves formally to exalt or honor the addressee etc. in an objective way because of being an element of the DICTUM, it is natural that <-RERU/-RARERU> verb groups occur quite cogently in the talk or question in which the Emperor or some other member of the Imperial Family addresses directly to a qualified citizen personally or to a large audience in a public speech. This fact proves that the use of the <-RERU/-RARERU> verb group is not the realization of power relationship, but simply a style of speech suitable to an official occasion. The users of this type of verb group extend from the Imperial Family to other persons holding higher official positions through to TV personalities or TV reporters, since those last categories can be accounted as representing some institutionally sanctioned organization. The analysis of the recorded data reveals the tendency in which the position of <-RERU/-RARERU> verb group is not that of an expression of genuine respect towards the addressee etc., but that of a formal style of politeness, restricted in its use to the institutionalized event, with occasional aberrations. The study of the verb group in terms of genre or register remains to be resumed together with the research related to the other semantic aspects of <-RERU/-RARERU>.
