This paper was presented at the conference of Nordic Association for American Studies (9-18 Aug. 1999, Univ. of Turku, Finland). American Studies at the Millennium attracted many schalors of the world. We presented the subject of the contrasted cultural aspects between America and Japan. Many researchers showed interests in our subject and discussed various values each nation puts on culture. We agreed at the point that culture regulates lifestyles of each nation in its social structure and develops their creative impetus to the next generation. We also recognized that human beings act on their inherited tradition and create new culture infusing into the global tradition.
