Economic, metallurgical and operational advantages are said to accrue from agitation of arc furnace heats by induction stirrer which is attached to outside of the furnace shell. In the present study, the construction features of the first model of the stirrer which was designed to operate on three phases at 100 volts was described. The distribution of flux density over the stirrer was measured under various conditions. Employing mercury instead of molten steel, the bath motion of various amounts of mercury was observed under various flux densities. When input power was 455 watts (100 volts), average flux density at 5 cm above the stirrer was about 1,000 gauss and that at 10 cm was about 250 gauss, that is, flux density decreased proportionally to the square of the distance. It was found that flux density of about 1,000 gauss was necessary to obtain proper stirring effect. Another design for the second model was proposed in order to obtain more effective stirring effect.
