The absorption of nitrogen by chromium and aluminium in their solid and liquid states were studied as some typical examples of good absorber. The results obtained were summarized as follows : 1) The data by Valensi (solid state) and the author (liquid state) on chromium were investigated statistico-thermodynamically taking the interaction energy Ψ_<αα> between the solved nitrogen atoms into consideration. 2) Nitrogen was reacted upon molten aluminium under one atmospheric pressure, and the total nitrogen contents of the specimens were determined by the usual Kjeldahl method and the AlN nitrogen contents by the ester-halogen method. Upon examining the results, it was ascertained that all the reacting nitrogen combined into AlN and nothing was left for interstitial solution. That is, nitrogen does not dissolve in molten aluminium strictly speaking, but only AlN compound is formed by chemical reaction between aluminium and nitrogen. Accordingly, the statement by Smithells that "the saturation value of absorption of nitrogen in molten aluminium rises steeply with the rise in temperature" is erroneous in the view point of the present experiment.
