Our former study shows that fiber tape wrapping has little effect on increasing shear capacities of existing reinforced concrete columns with round bars used as longitudinal reinforcement, because the shear capacities were limited by poor bond strength of round bars. This study describes an experimental investigation about effects of wrapping aramid fiber tape around existing such R/C columns to confine concrete in improving the ductility after flexural yielding. The main test parameters were amount of wrapped fiber tape and reinforcement ratio of existing hoops. The following conclusions were drawn from the experimental results : (1) Ultimate rotational angle and energy absorption of the test columns enhanced with the increase of amount of wrapped fiber tape, and the increment by wrapping fiber tape was hardly dependent on existing hoop ratios. (2) Although yielding of longitudinal bars occurred, the loading capacity of column was determined by extending of longitudinal bars out of the anchorage zone and resulting in crushing of concrete in the compressive side at the top and bottom of the column. Therefore the flexural capacity was lower than the calculated one which was obtained without considering the bond failure. (3) The ultimate rotational angle and energy absorption, considered herein as indices of ductility of column, can be evaluated by combined stiffness index proposed in this paper.
