This experimental study aimed to evaluate quantitatively effects of wrapping of aramid and carbon continuous fiber tapes around existing reinforced concrete columns with inadequate amount of hoops on the shear capacity. The variable parameters were the following : the existing shear reinforcement of hoops, and the kind and the amount of wrapped fiber tape. By wrapping fiber tape around existing reinforced concrete columns, an increase in the shear capacity was achieved, although this was limited by the crushing of concrete, and not by the rupture of the fiber tape. The rate of shear increment, however, decreased as the amount of wrapped fiber tape was increased. Even for columns without hoops, the wrapping of fiber tape proved to be as effective as for those columns with hoops. Finally, the fiber tape also proved to be substantially effective in avoiding the spalling of the concrete cover.
