This experimental study aimed to evaluate the effects of wrapping of aramid and carbon continuous fiber tapes around the exsting R/C columns with insufficient amount of hoops, on the improvement of the ductility after flexural yielding. The test variables were the reinforcement ratio of existing hoops, and the kind and the amount of wrapped fiber tape. From the experiments carried out during this study, the following conclusions can be drawn : (1) The ductility of the columns enhanced as the amount of wrapped fiber tape was increased. (2) Even when the shear capacity of column is not higher than the flexural capacity, the ductility of column can be improved by the wrapping of fiber tape. (3) The wrapping of fiber tape proved to be effective on improving the ductility of not only undamaged columns but also previously damaged columns. (4) After a peak load dropped about 70% of the first peak load during the cyclic loading within the same amplitude, the ultimate deformation capacity was not further developed, and thus it was limited by its amplitude. (5) The ultimate deformation capacity can be estimated by the combined reinforcing index of hoop and fiber tape, proposed in this paper. (6) The wrapping of fiber tape proved to be effective in avoding the spalling of the cover concrete.
