This study was carried out as a part of the experimental studies for improving the shear capacity and ductility of existing R/C columns, in which it was expected to fail in a brittle manner due to inadequate amount of hoops, by wrapping aramid FRP tape spirally around them. In the columns with shear span ratio of 1.5,wrapping of suitable amount of tape enabled to fail them in flexure and significantly improve their ductility. In extremely short columns with shear span ratio of 1.0,tape wrapping was effective in preventing a sudden drop of the loading capacity and in increasing the deformation capacity, even when the shear capacity could not exceed the flexural capacity yet. And still more amount of wrapped tape could finally change the failure mode of the columns from shear to flexure. The tape wrapping proved to be effective in improving not only the ductility of undamaged columns but also that of previously damaged columns. And, tape wrapping was effective in preventing the cover concrete from spalling off. Moreover it was demonstrated that the shear capacity and ductility of R/C columns wrapped with tape could be estimated by the combined index of hoop and tape, proposed in this paper.
