The shear capacity of reinforced concrete beams in determined by concrete crushing before yielding of stirrups, called shear-compression failure. It is considerded that increasing of the quantity of stirrups cannot directly lead to increasing the shear capacity of beam. Because the shear capcity is detrmined by the capacity of concrete strut if the shear capacity carried by stirrups has much reserve with truss mechanism. But it has been well known that even in this situation, according to test results, increasing the quantity of stirrups increases the shear capacity significantly. From the above consideration, this study experimenetally describes the effect of stirrups on the shear capacity of beams in the mode of shear-compression failure. Test variables were the reinforcement raito, spacing and material type of stirrups. The test results demonstrated that shear capacity was increased by increasing the stirrup raito or by decreasing spacing of stirrup under the condition of the same ratio, when shear force carried by stirrups increased similarly. Therefore, it is concluded that the shear capacity can be increased even in this situation, because confining concrete strut in the truss mechanism by stirrups increases the strength of concrete.
