In a switched capacitor (SC) implementing a filter transfer function with a large spread of coefficient value, capacitance ratios become large if we use a conventional circuit, which results in a large total capacitance value and consequently large chip area. To overcome this problem, a new type circuit of SC infinite impulse response (IIR) filter using the transfer function coefficient ratios is presented. After the transfer function coefficients are rearranged in the order of each absolute value decreasingly, the normalized capacities of capacitors in the circuit are set to the ratios of neighboring coefficients. By this procedure, significant reduction in total capacitance is achieved. It is shown that the filter performance degradation caused by element deviation is as small as that of the conventional IIR filter. Moreover, numerical and experimental results are presented to confirm the validity of the filter proposed.
