An analysis is given for the current density of fast ions which are extracted from a laser-irradiated spherical target. The thermal spread in velocity of fast electrons being taken into account, the sheath potential formed around the target to extract fast ions is obtained by solving the Poisson equation. The current density of fast ions is directly correlated with the velocity distribution function of fast electrons and the effective frequency of collisions between fast electrons and the target plasma.
