As a part of taxonomic studies of the genus Dryopteris, we have analysed a population of Dryopteris erythrosora complex. An investigation area was established at Hachioji, Tokyo, and 5 quadrats (I : 16m^2,II : 10.5m^2,III : 14.3m^2,IV : 7.5m^2,V : 9.2m^2) were set up. Plants common to this area were described in order to indicate of the environmental conditions. 72 stocks belonging to the Dryopteris erythrosora complex were used for examination of reproduction type, various morphological characters, and distribution of each stock. As a result, all stocks were identified as the apogamous type based on the number of spores per sposangium. These stocks were grouped into 5 types (A, B, C, D, and E) based on color of stipes and shape of pinnules. Among the 5 types, A and D type were determined to be Dryopteris erythrosora var. erythrosora and D. erythrosora var. dilatata respectively. Other types were out of the range of above two varieties and have no Latin names. Some differences were observed among the habitats of the various types of Dryopteris erythrosora. Stocks of C type grow on the upper part of the slopes of this area, and stocks of B type grow on the lower part of the slopes. Variations in the shape and size of stomata and spore were observed and discussed. Type D differs from the other types in shape of spore.
