The Influence of CuO–BaO Mixtures Addition on the Grain Growth of BaTiO3 Ceramics

Densification and grain growth development in CuO–BaO mixture doped BaTiO3 have been studied on the effect of the ratio of CuO–BaO mixtures (molar ratio, CuO/BaO=1, 2, and 2.5). Grain growth for BaTiO3 with 1 wt% CuO–BaO mixtures addition is studied for sintering from 950° C to 1250° C in air. The average grain size of BaTiO3 ceramics is the functions of sintering temperature, sintering time, and CuO/BaO ratio. The results are discussed in terms of the kinetic growth equation: Gn=K0t exp (-Q/RT). The grain growth exponents decrease with the increasing of CuO/BaO ratio and sintering temperature. For BaTiO3 fluxed with CuO/BaO=1, 2, and 2.5, the average grain-growth exponents are determined to be 5.3, 5, and 4.3 and the activation energies are estimated to be 290±60, 314±40, and 348±19 kJ/mol, respectively. The molar ratio of CuO–BaO mixture will affect the average grain size, grain growth kinetic exponent, and activation energy of BaTiO3 ceramics.
