1. The leaves of Loranthus pentandrus L. were extracted with MeOH and water and nine fractions were prepared. 2. From the extracts, a large amount of quercitrin, besides hydrocarbons and fats, was isolated. 3. The fractions and subfractions were examined for the effects on the blood pressure of anesthesized rats and on the chicken ileum smooth muscle. 4. The water soluble fraction (fr. 9) showed distinct hypotensive effect, but it was closely related to the toxicity. Some fractions from the methanol extract also showed weak hypotensive effect. 5. Some fractions (e. g. fr. 6) from the methanol extract were found to have ileum contracting activity and the ether soluble fraction (fr. 4) showed papaverine-like spasmolytic effect. 6. Subfractionation of fr. 6 strengthened the smooth muscle contracting activity, and the presence of two peaks of activity was found in the fraction. 7. The mechanism of muscle contraction induced by fr. 6 was studied and the possibility of the participation of endogenous histamine or acetylcholine was excluded.
