Mineral calaverite AuTe<inf>2</inf>is a layered compound with an incommensurately modulated structure. The modulation is characterized by the formation of molecular-like Te<inf>2</inf>dimers. We have found that the breaking of Te<inf>2</inf>dimers that occurs in Au<inf>1-x</inf>Pt<inf>x</inf>Te<inf>2</inf>results in the emergence of superconductivity at T_{\text{c}} = 4.0 K.
