Rippling failure occurring on rollers and gears is well known as one of the phenomena resulting from plastic flow of the surface layer caused by repeated sliding-rolling contact. Though a few experimental results on the rippling failure have been already reported, there have been few studies explaining systematically the generating mechanism of the rippling. We previously investigated rippling failure occurring on gears and rollers by using turbine oil as lubricant. The rippling failure which occurs due to the repeated higher contact stress is closely related to lubricant. In this paper, we considered how lubricants influence the rippling failure. In particular, the effects of additives of lubricating oils were investigated in detail, using rollers made of JIS SCM415H material whose contacting surfaces were hardened by gas-carburizing. Test oils added several additives to gear oils were used as lubricant. Consequently, the following becomes clear in this paper. The surface hardness of the lower-speed roller becomes higher with increase in the number of stress cycles, and the difference in surface hardness between the higher-speed and the lower-speed rollers appears gradually when the rippling failure occurs on the surface of the higher-speed roller. If a proper quantity of additive is added to gear oil (base oil), the occurrence of rippling failure can be prevented.
