We report the dependence of gas molecules on the resistance switch effect observed in a simple gold nanogap junction. A large negative differential resistance, which is a characteristic behavior of the current–voltage curve of the resistance switch in a vacuum, was observed even in argon and nitrogen gas environments. In contrast, the characteristic behavior was not observed in oxygen gas and air environments. These results indicate that oxygen and water molecules prevent the change in nanogap width and a nanogap device can be operated with inactive gas sealing.
