Photo-Assisted Electronic Transport in Impurity-Doped Carbon Nanotubes

We report a theoretical study on the electronic structures and photo-assisted transport properties of three types of impurity-doped carbon nanotubes: boron or nitrogen substituted and pyridine-like nitrogen-doped. The pyridine-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes exhibit a nearly flat impurity band between the valence and the conduction bands, whereas the boron- and nitrogen-substituted nanotubes show dispersive impurity bands overlapping the valence and the conduction bands, respectively. Due to the existence of the flat band, the pyridine-like nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes show unipolar transport and their conductances are enhanced by increasing the power and frequency of the light.
