Multi-tone demodulation (MTD), which is capable of increasing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), was theoretically investigated in the frequency domain and confirmed through experiments. It was discovered that the signal amplitude was increased by coherent addition of the harmonics while the noise amplitude was increased by incoherent addition, and that the SNR improvement is balanced between them. This was also confirmed in an experiment. Therefore, it was concluded that extending the input bandwidth to an extreme value is not necessary. We also found that the jitter in the clock that drives the analog-to-digital converter is a major factor that limits the efficiency of MTD and that should be taken into account when designing a system.
