Differential Phase Shift Keying Acoustic Communication in Air for Low-Signal-to-Noise Ratio Environment

In this paper, we propose a novel method of demodulation in low-signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) environments for differential phase shift keying (DPSK) acoustic communication in air. A component of cross-correlation between a received signal and a reference sinusoidal wave with carrier frequency and one-symbol time (reference sinusoidal wave) is added to a receiver before a process of delay detection. The reference sinusoidal wave has the same carrier frequency as the received signal and the same duration as one-symbol time. In conventional delay detection, when an environmental noise is heavy, the received signal is distorted and the bit error rate (BER) performance deteriorates. By this proposed method, we can reduce the influence of environmental noise before the delay detection, and BER performance is improved in low-SNR environments.
