Structure and Magnetic Properties of Fe/Au Epitaxial Multilayer Films

Fe/Au epitaxial multilayer films were prepared on MgO(001) and MgO(011) substrates by alternate deposition of Fe and Au atomic layers. The effects of Fe/Au composition and substrate temperature on the formation of $L1_{0}$ ordered phase were investigated. $L1_{0}$ ordered phase is formed in samples with nearly $L1_{0}$ phase stoichiometry and Au-rich compositions on both substrates, while $L1_{0}$ ordered phase formation is not recognized in Fe-rich samples. A stronger X-ray diffraction intensity of $L1_{0}$ phase is observed in an Au-rich sample prepared at lower substrate temperature. The $L1_{0}$ ordered phase formation is interpreted to be promoted by the stress possibly caused by Au atom replacement of Fe sites in the $L1_{0}$-FeAu structure and by employment of lower substrate temperature.
