Fe thin films were deposited on glass and Si substrates by MBE. When an Fe was deposited directly either on a glass or a Si substrate, a typical Volmer-Weber mode was observed at the early stage. When an Al underlayer was introduced, the deposited Fe atoms showed a tendency to diffuse along the Al grain boundaries. While on an Ag underlayer, an Fe film with uniform thickness was formed on the Ag layer from the early stage of film growth. The relationship between the Fe thin film microstructure and the related properties is discussed.
