To improve the field emission characteristics of graphite nanofiber (GNF) emitter, a simple method for controlling diameters of GNFs was developed using a granulated catalyst. The catalyst was composed of catalyst metal and noncatalytic oxide, and easily formed into a thin film consisting of fine metal particles surrounded by oxide. The diameters of GNFs grown on it depended on the mixture ratio and decreased to 10 nm without high-temperature heating. The emission current was 100 times higher than that of GNFs grown using a conventional catalyst. This should lead to the realization of field emission display devices based on GNFs.
