Characteristics of Field-Effect Transistors with Vapor-Treated Magnesium Phthalocyanine Films

Vapor treatments using several organic solvents were carried out for vacuum-evaporated magnesium phthalocyanine (MgPc) thin films. The UV–vis absorption spectra, surface morphologies, and X-ray diffraction patterns were markedly altered by the treatments and depend on the vapor. Furthermore, Au top-contact organic field-effect transistors (OFETs) were fabricated using MgPc films with and without the vapor treatments. The FET with N-methylpyrrolidone treatment did not work, but that with dichloromethane vapor treatment showed a large improvement in the on/off ratio and field-effect mobilities. Ethanol vapor treatment (5 min) also improved the FET characteristics, but long-term treatment (60 min) induced poor performance.
