Dielectric Property and Electronic Structure of LaNbO4

Powder samples of lanthanum niobate demonstrated a dielectric anomaly at ${\approx}500$°C in both the dielectric constant and dielectric loss when the applied field frequency was 1000 kHz. They were transparent in the visible region, and exhibited a blue emission centered at 3 eV. The first-principles electronic structure computation for lanthanum niobate with both the monoclinic and tetragonal crystal structures revealed that lower conduction bands are mostly composed of Nb 4d $3z^{2}-1$ and $x^{2}-y^{2}$ orbitals and their hybridization with oxygen p-orbitals is weak.
