Thresholdless, hysteresis-free, "V-shaped" electrooptical switching in surface-stabilized ferroelectric liquid crystals, observed usually with a triangular voltage waveform was achieved using a combination of external capacitors and resistors at a driving characteristic frequency. The relationship between the external capacitors and the profile of the V-shape is discussed in terms of a voltage divider across the ferroelectric liquid crystal cell. An optimized circuit is demonstrated to alter the profile of the V-shaped electrooptical transmittance and raise the characteristic frequency so that the linear gray levels can be modulated in a wide range of applied voltage and operated at a driving frequency of 100 Hz.
