The Transverse Motions of Charged Nano-Particles under an AC Electric Field in a Nematic Liquid Crystal Cell

We fabricated an optically compensated bend (OCB) nematic liquid crystal (NLC) cell doped with a minute amount of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and discovered the transverse-motion phenomenon of the MWCNTs in the OCB NLC cell at 10 V AC voltage with a frequency of 5 Hz. A significant amount of MWCNTs were following various irregular trails, transversely wiggling across quite a large area. We explain the transverse-motion phenomenon of MWCNTs using the argument that MWCNTs trap impurity ions and become charged, causing them to move and shift in an OCB NLC cell.
