Electrooptical Characteristics of Liquid Crystal $\pi$-Cells Sustained by Aligned Polymers

A mixture of nematic liquid crystals and an ultraviolet (UV)-curable monomer in a $\pi$-cell was subjected to an applied voltage (curing voltage) during polymerization. The aligned polymer formed in the $\pi$-cell can sustain liquid crystal molecules in a bend or a splay configuration, depending on monomer concentration and curing voltage. Investigations on the electrooptical properties of the $\pi$-cell show that this method effectively stabilizes liquid crystals in the bend state with a low pretilt angle.
