As a basic study of a novel organic vertical cavity surface emitting laser (VCSEL) with cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) mirrors, the resonance characteristics of a passive CLC cavity are investigated theoretically and experimentally. The analysis based on Maxwell wave equations clarifies the properties of the optical field in the resonator and the effects of refractive index on resonance characteristics. CLC mirrors fabricated by photopolymerizing the mixture of chiral monoacrylate, nematic liquid crystal, and photoinitiator show a reflectance of 73% for the left-handed circular polarization light at 638 nm. A Fabry–Perot resonator based on these CLC mirrors induces the resonance of left-handed circular polarization. The finesse and the FSR of this resonator are 9.2 and 56.3 pm, respectively, which agree well with the theoretical predictions.
