We investigated the population transfer of Ar $1s_{5}$ metastable atoms under optical pumping of the $1s_{5}$–$2p_{9}$ transition in an Ar–He glow discharge. From the pump-probe experiment, we found that the population density of the $1s_{5}$ level was decreased. We analyzed the depletion of the $1s_{5}$ level using the rate equations, which describe the transfer of the $1s_{5}$ atoms to the ground state via excited levels. The pumping-energy dependence of the population of $1s_{5}$, deduced from the rate considerations, agreed with the experimental result. According to the present model of population transfer and by measuring the time evolution of the $1s_{5}$ population under pulsed pumping, we determined the rate of deexcitation of $1s_{5}$ atoms.
