An allene-doped liquid argon ionization chamber with a sensitivevolume of 48 mm×48 mm×40 mm has beenconstructed and investigated for precise measurement of the heavy ionenergies at around 100 MeV/n. An energy resolution of 1% (fullwidth at half maximum [FWHM]) was achieved for the 99 MeV/n 16Oand 125 MeV/n 20Ne ion beams. However, the energy resolutionwas found to deteriorate as the beam intensity increased. Tounderstand this phenomenon, a simple model is proposed, in which aspace-charge electric field due to the positive ions left along thetrack of an incident ion is taken into consideration. The estimatedelectric field is strong enough to worsen the energy resolution whenthe incident beam intensity is only 100 particles/s.
