N-octadecyl-2-methyl-4-nitroaniline was evaporated onto KCl and glass substrates under a vacuum. Molecular orientation against the substrate surface was found to vary from lateral on KCl to normal on glass, and fine epitaxial crystal growth over the entire surface of KCl was observed at the substrate temperature of 50°C. It has been demonstrated that by third harmonic generation measurements using a polarized laser beam, the tilt angle of the 2-methyl-4-nitroaniline moiety in the unit cell can be determined.
