Two-Dimensional Array of Nanotubes Grown in Porous Anodic Alumina by Ethanol Electrolysis

We present a simple technique for fabricating a two-dimensional array of carbon (or organic) tubes with an outer diameter of a few tens of nm and a height of a few hundreds of nm. Porous anodic alumina (PAA) on a silicon substrate is used as a template of ordered nanometer-scale pores. Electrolysis of ethanol solution using a cathode with a PAA template results in the deposition of carbon or organic matter into the pores. Scanning electron micrographs taken after removing the PAA template demonstrate that the deposited substance appears in the shape of hollow tubes.
