Guided Mode Lasing from Hollow Square Microcavity with Round Inner Corners

We propose guided modes in a hollow square microcavity having round inner corners and investigate the characteristics of these guided modes using a ray-optics model, in which the guided modes are formed by the total internal reflection of light at inner and outer flat boundaries. For a given order of guided modes, the optical path length decreases linearly as the thickness of the hollow square cavity decreases at a fixed outer size. The slope of variation in the optical path length increases with the mode order. Multiple mode orders can be realized with fixed inner and outer sizes by adjusting the curvature radius of round inner corners. We experimentally demonstrated the lasing of the proposed guided modes by using an inner-etched thin square capillary.
