Comparison of the Efficacy of CARTO 3 System with That of CARTO-XP in the Procedure of Circumferential Pulmonary Vein Isolation

CARTO 3 is a third-generation electroanatomical mapping system. We compared the duration of circumferential pulmonary vein isolation (CPVI) procedure and fluoroscopy time between CARTO 3 and CARTO XP. The 34 consecutive patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) were divided into two groups; Group 1 underwent CPVI using CARTO 3 after December, 2010 (n=18, 14 male, 17 with paroxysmal AF) and Group 2 using CARTO XP before November, 2010 (n=16, 11 male, 12 with paroxysmal AF). All patients underwent successful CPVI. The time for left atrial mapping for integrating the electroanatomical map with the three-dimensional CT image (median value) was 12 minutes in Group 1 and 15 in Group 2. The time for right and left CPVI was 41 minutes in Group 1 and 42 in Group 2. Fluoroscopy time was 24 minutes in Group 1 and 34 in Group 2. Total procedure time was 136 minutes in Group 1 and 129 in Group 2. The times for mapping and fluoroscopy were shorter in Group 1 than in Group 2 with no significant difference. There were no complications associated with the procedure. In conclusion, CARTO 3 system is suggested to be useful in decreasing the mapping and fluoroscopy times in accomplishing CPVI.
