Effects of Age and Gender on Heart Rate Turbulence in Healthy Population

Background: Heart rate turbulence (HRT) has been proposed as an autonomic predictor of cardiac mortality. In general, autonomic predictors are affected by age and gender, whereas there is little available information regarding HRT. The aim of this study was to assess whether or not there are differences on age and gender of parameters for HRT determination in healthy population. Methods: We enrolled 150 healthy subjects (age 62±16 years, male 82). We classified into 4 groups; younger male as group A, elder male as group B, younger female as group C, and elder female as group D. All subjects underwent a 24-hour Holter electrocardiogram and HRT were measured with two parameters: turbulence onset (TO) and turbulence slope (TS). We compared the value of TO and TS among 4 groups. Results: Average value of TO and TS were −0.74±2.87% and 7.52±7.80 ms/RRI, respectively. Although there was no significant difference on TO, the value of TS significantly differed between group B (−0.70±1.80 ms/RRI) and group C (−1.06±2.61 ms/RRI) (P=0.01), and group C and D (−1.00±1.66 ms/RRI) (P=0.02). Conclusion: The results of present study revealed that there are significant effects by age and gender on HRT parameters.
