The effect of Ubretid on the motor function of the gastrointestinal tract in dogs was studied with the aid of electromyography. Then a cine-fluoroscopic study was made in human subjects following administration of Ubretid. It was found that the gastric and intestinal peristalsis was actively stimulated by Ubretid.<BR>Then, Ubretid was administered to ten cases of paralytic ileus following laparotomies, and the results were compared with ten similar cases who were treated with another type of peristalsis-stimulating agents as the control group.Awareness of peristalsis, passage of flatus and bowel movements occurred much sooner in the group of Ubretid treatment. The function of Ubretid was quite effective.<BR>None of them developed severe side effect, although mild diarrhea and abdominal pain were noted in few patients.
