Fundamental study on restoration of Sparganium fallax Graebn. Community

Several communities of Sparganium fallax Graebn. were found within areas designated for development at Koga Gun, Shiga Prefecture. This species is ranked as vulnerable and in the Red Data book of Japan. Since the development plan could not be altered, off-side mitigation through transplantation of Sparganium fallax was considered the best option to restore the community. Firstly, the phenology of this plant species in the original habitat was studied. Secondly, transplanting experiments near the habitat of Sparganium fallax were carried out. At the same time, experiments on the effect of soil types, water depth, and soil depth were conducted. The results showed that water depth affects the time of emergent of ramets. In the water area, ramets of water leaves emerged in autumn and pass the winter. On the other hand, ramets emerged into wet area in spring. In depth of water below 25 cm, soil depth of above 30 cm and clay soil were important factors that affect growth of plants.
