2-Chlorothiophene (<B>1</B>) was found to easily react with certain active aromatic compounds (<B>2</B>) in the presence of AlCl<SUB>3</SUB> under mild conditions, yielding the corresponding 2-arylthiophenes (<B>3</B>) and 5-chloro-2,2′-bithienyl (<B>5</B>) as the main products. With compounds more reactive than <B>1</B>, the formation of <B>3</B> predominated. Reactions of <B>1</B> with aryl alkyl ethers, for example, afforded the corresponding <B>3</B> in 44–83% yields in one step.
