Pressure effect in syngas conversion to ethylene glycol (EG) is understood in terms of respective partial pressures of hydrogen (<I>P</I>H2) and carbon monoxide (<I>P</I>CO). A new mechanism is proposed to explain an extraordinary effect of <I>P</I>H2 on the selectivity to EG.
