Triiron tetraoxide pretreated by polyhalomethane was shown to catalyze the halgen-exchange reactions of polyhalomethanes CH<I><SUB>l</SUB></I>Br<I><SUB>m</SUB></I>Cl<I><SUB>n</SUB></I>(<I>l</I>=1 or 2). The exchange proceeds consecutively giving, for example, CHBrCl<SUB>2</SUB>, CHBr<SUB>2</SUB>Cl, and CHBr<SUB>3</SUB> as the main products from CHCl<SUB>3</SUB>. The mechanism of the reaction is discussed briefly.
