In the presence of organic bromides, toluene was oxidized photochemically by molecular oxygen, producing benzaldehyde as the major product. A modified procedure using hydrobromic acid and bubbling air also gave benzaldehyde with high efficiency and can be applied for the synthetic purpose. Similarly ethylbenzene gave acetophenone.
