The ZnCl<SUB>2</SUB>-catalyzed reaction of aldehydes with hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) resulted in the formation of <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-disubstituted methanediamines, which were found to be formed stepwisely via 1 : 1- and 1 : 2-adducts of HMDS and aldehydes.
