Ni(II) complexes of N,N.RAR.-ethylenebis(o-mercaptobenzamide): A quadridentate thiolato amide {S2N2} ligand.

Three nickel(II) complexes with <I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-ethylenebis(<I>o</I>-mercaptobenzamide), H<SUB>4</SUB>ebtsa, a quadridentate {S<SUB>2</SUB>N<SUB>2</SUB>} ligand classified as a PAC (polyanionic chelating) ligand, were isolated. Although they were different in their apparent charges, their coordination units were revealed to be equal from their physicochemical behavior. They will be described as Ni(H<SUB>2</SUB>ebtsa). EXAFS and XANES study was undertaken for one of the new compounds, and the results were compared with those for similar three NiS<SUB>2</SUB>N<SUB>2</SUB> complexes, (<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-ethylenebis(<I>o</I>-mercaptobenzylidenaminato))Ni(II), (<I>N</I>,<I>N</I>′-ethylenebis(<I>o</I>-mercaptobenzylaminato))Ni(II) and (NEt<SUB>4</SUB>)[Ni(SPh)<SUB>4</SUB>]. From these results and a comparison with the results for [Ni(ebtsa)]<SUB>2</SUB>, it was concluded that a square planar {S<SUB>2</SUB>N<SUB>2</SUB>} unit was reliable as the coordination sphere of Ni(H<SUB>2</SUB>ebtsa). The character of the amide proton in the coordination unit was also studied.
