Carbometallation of 1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1,3-butadiyne with trimethylaluminium in the presence of a bis(cyclopentadienyl)zirconium dichloride or bis(cyclopentadienyl)titanium dichloride catalyst afforded (<I>E</I>)-2-methyl-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1-buten-3-yne selectively after aqueous workup. Treatment of the intermediate organoaluminium compound with an electrophile like D<SUB>2</SUB>O, <I>N</I>-bromosuccinimide, <I>N</I>-chlorosuccinimide, or acetyl chloride gave the same hydrocarbon possessing D, Br, Cl, or CH<SUB>3</SUB>CO at C-1. The reaction using a bis(cyclopentadienyl)vanadium dichloride catalyst gave rise to (<I>Z</I>)-1,2-dimethyl-1,4-bis(trimethylsilyl)-1-buten-3-yne in a single step.
