The catalytic activity of RhCl(PPh3)3 and RhCl(CO)(PPh3)2 for oxidations of styrene and cinnamaldehyde has been studied. Under oxygen atmosphere, these complexes can cause catalytically oxidation of cinnamaldehyde to give benzaldehyde, glyoxal, benzene and styrene. The reaction is complicated because decarbonylation reaction takes place with oxidation, and the carbonyl complex formed plays a catalytic role for the oxidation.
