Accurate objective methods have not been available for evaluating the efficacy of steroid nasal sprays. Flunisolide nasal spray was administered to 48 patients with nasal allergy. Its effect was evaluated and compared with the conventional methods (Okuda)and the thread test of nasal secretion.The combined rate of improvement for "moderately improved" and "markedly improved" was 58.3%. When "slightly improved" was included it was 85.4%. The rates of improvement for the three major subjective symptoms of "sneezing", "rhinorrhea" and "nasal obstruction" were 81.3%, 83.9% and 51.7%, respectively. The major subjective signs correlated well with the values of the thread test and showed significant improvement with the nasal spray. The authors concluded that the thread test of nasal secretion is very useful in the objective evaluation of drug effects in nasal allergy.
