In examining the latency of the middle ear muscle reflex, not only the stapedius muscle but also the tensor tympani muscle should be taken into account, because the tensor tympani muscle is involved in this reflex in some cases. In order to know the characteristics of the reflex of the tensor tympani muscle, the impedance of the ear drum was measured simultaneously with the ear canal pressure in 5 patients with complete facial palsy. The tensor tympani reflex was characterized by a marked inward movement of the ear drum and the latency of 2.7 times as long as in the normal. In order to know whether the muscle responsible for the reflex can be estimated by the ear drum movement, the latencies of 100 normal ears were examined in each direction of the ear drum movement. It was found that the latencies of the normal ears were nearly the same regardless of different directions of the drum movement and that every reflex was caused by the stapedius muscle. Therefore in case of a markedly prolonged latency, the reflex may be elicited by the tensor tympani contraction. Both the inward movement of the ear drum and the marked elongation of latency seemed to be helpful in differentiating the tensor tympani reflex from the stapedial reflex.
