A Case of Maxillary Cancer Associated with Marked Leucocytosis

A 57-year-old man with left maxillary squamous cell carcinoma had markedly elevated peripheral leucocyte counts, although no overt infections, hematological disorders or bone marrow metastasis were found. The peripheral leucocytosis (20, 000-30, 000/mm3) with decreased by radiation, 5FU infusion into the left superficial temporal artery and necrotomy of the tumor in the left maxillary sinus. At the end of those treatments, the peripheral leucocyte count was normal, but after relapse of the tumor, it rose again markedly (maximum 150, 300/mm3). Colony sitmulating factor (CSF) producing tumor was suspected, and CSF activities in serum and urine were examined by leucocyte colony formation. There was no significant difference between the patient and healthy controls, but it was clinically thought that this tumor produced CSF.
