Roentgenographic changes in bones and joints of the extremities in the aging.

When viewing some aging changes of bones and joints on a X-ray film, it is difficult to determine whether it is physiological or pathological. Therefore, the authors have been attempting to gain a more complete knowledge concerning "physiological" aging of bones and joints in the general population by examining X-ray films of intact extremities in our outpatients who suffered mainly from trauma.Each bone and joint was evaluated regarding four items, that is, osteoporosis, narrowing of joint space, subchondral bone sclerosis and spur formation, and rated 0-no changes, 1-some changes, and 2-prominent changes.The results were as follows.1) Osteoporotic changes of the upper extremities, or in women, were more prominent than those of the lower extremities or in men.2) On the other hand subchondral osteosclerosis and spur formation were more prominent in the lower extremities, or in men when compared with the upper extremities, or in women.3) Osteoporotic changes were grater in the left upper extremity.4) The difference between male and female, the upper and lower extremities, and the right and left side were considered as some factors influencing physiological aging of bones and joints.
